Seattle's Anti-Graffiti Efforts

Costs of Graffiti in Seattle The City of Seattle spent approximately $1.8 million dollars a year abating graffiti from public property. Also, the nearly 300 survey respondents who reported graffiti damage spent a total of $232,000 to remove graffiti per year.

A web survey of over 900 Seattle residents, businesses and organizations revealed a range of public opinion, with 39% indicating that graffiti was not a problem and 40% indicating that graffiti was a medium to very big problem. These results appear to reflect how often respondents had been the victim of graffiti: 37% percent had never been victims, while 33% had been victimized at least several times a year

Security Window Films

Security Window Films and Impact Protection Attachment Systems are engineered to protect people and property from a range of security concerns, including:
• Forced entry crimes and theft
• Bomb blasts
• Acts of vandalism

They include a special, thicker adhesive that helps hold broken glass together, hindering anyone trying to break and enter through a window. They also help reduce the threat of flying glass in the event of an explosion.

Deter forced entry and theft. A burglary is reported nearly once every second according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.6 Glass doors and windows are among the most vulnerable points of entry into your property. Help reduce losses due to smash-and-grab crimes by making entry more difficult.

Accidental explosions are everyday risks for many industrial, lab and manufacturing facilities. Bomb threats often involve schools, government buildings and commercial facilities. 3M™ Security Window Films and 3M™ Impact Protection Attachment Systems have been tested to industry bomb blast standards and meet the performance requirements on numerous glazing types under a variety of blast loads.

Property crime in the Emerald City

Property crime in the Emerald City experienced a slight uptick: there were 38,288 property crimes recorded in 2020 compared to 37,741 in 2019. That was about a 1.4% increase. According to an April 2020 estimate from the Washington State Office of Financial Management, the city’s population was growing by 1.8%.

Queen Anne experienced the most property crimes of any Seattle neighborhood last year, followed by Northgate and Capitol Hill at second and third respectively.

Burglaries saw the largest year-over-year increase of any property crime at 35%. Larceny and theft actually experienced a 12% decrease in 2020 according to a Seattle P-I data analysis. Diaz ended his remarks by stating that crime numbers were trending down at the end of 2020 and emphasized the work of the department in responding to crimes.

Safety Benefits of Window Film

While window films are commonly known to extend the life of windows, reduce glare, and lower cooling costs, there are other several other important benefits to consider— the safety benefits. Window films can offer protection against the risk of personal injury and property damage in the case of accidents, severe weather, crime, and in some cases, even explosions.

Accident Protection

Security films are designed to offer protection from broken glass during an accident inside your home, office, or car. When glass breaks, the shattered pieces pose a serious danger that can cause severe injuries, and in some cases, death. The films are engineered with a powerful adhesive that reduces the hazard of broken glass and keeps the pieces together, safely attached to the film.

Crime Protection

Glass windows and doors are the easiest way for criminals to gain access to your home or business. With the popular smash and grab crimes, the intruders count on the fact that the shattered glass will allow them to enter the property quickly and leave just as quickly. With certain types of security films, the glass isn’t easily penetrated, even when struck by a heavy object. And if they do manage to break the glass, it won’t shatter so the thieves often become discouraged and move on to an easier target.

Protection from Natural Disasters

When a powerful storm moves through a neighborhood, town, or city, strong wind gusts can rush inside homes and offices, causing serious structural damage, even collapsing structures from the inside. Specially designed security films prevent the glass from shattering, keeping the wind, rain, and flying debris out during storms and other natural disasters. By holding the glass together, these films minimize damage caused to your property, as well as prevent potential injuries to people nearby. And, since severe weather can happen at any time, with little or no warning, security films provide passive protection 24/7.

Protection from Explosions

Research conducted after explosions, points to flying and broken glass as one of the main causes of death or injury. In fact, a single square foot of glass can produce up to 200 deadly, razor-sharp fragments. While nothing can completely protect against powerful industrial explosions, bombs, or other catastrophic events, some highly-specialized security films attached properly to the window frame with patented anchoring systems have been proven to be effective in reducing the risk of glass breakage.
